Muhammad Al Assadi vs. Ali Sina

Part IV

Skies like Smoke: Did Muhammad speak of the Big Bang?

I asked you how Muhammad knew the Heavens and Earth were smoke like, you insisted I over looked your answer, could you read your answer and point out how you answered my question? The question again says: how Muhammad knew that the Heavens were smoke like, I did not ask your opinion whether if they knew or not is proof or not on Qur’aan being true, I asked you: how Muhammad knew that the heavens were smoke like also Earth. I did not say this is the only thing we have, now if you wish to jump every time we bring something, you may land wrong one time and break something, you need to watch out. Again, I ask you: how Muhammad knew that the Heavens and Earth were smoke like, whether this proves Qur’aan true or not is not an issue to discuss at this line now, I hope you can see how those words are spoken with such assured manner, not having ifs or buts. How Muhammad knew such, and was so sure about. You have no way of monkying around saying he was not sure, you have no proof, and I think you need to answer the question, or simply say you cannot, I will still be waiting to see that, do not come around say you already did, then I will ask you to do again, and answer again next time.
O LORD give me strength, again, the question is: how Muhammad knew that Earth and the Heavens were smoke, before he split them? Too hard still, I give up? "

Mr. Al Assadi: I already answered this question. I will reword it. Your interpretation of this verse is wrong. Let me quote all the four verses that talk about his cosmic event.

Yusuf Ali

041:009

Say: Is it that ye deny Him Who created the earth in two Days? And do ye join equals with Him? He is the Lord of (all) the Worlds.

041:010

He set on the (earth), mountains standing firm, high above it, and bestowed blessings on the earth, and measure therein all things to give them nourishment in due proportion, in four Days, in accordance with (the needs of) those who seek (Sustenance).

041:011

Moreover He comprehended in His design the sky, and it had been (as) smoke: He said to it and to the earth: "Come ye together, willingly or unwillingly." They said: "We do come (together), in willing obedience."

041:012

So He completed them as seven firmaments in two Days, and He assigned to each heaven its duty and command. And We adorned the lower heaven with lights, and (provided it) with guard. Such is the Decree of (Him) the Exalted in Might, Full of Knowledge.

Here we see Muhammad saying that the first thing God did was to create the Earth in two days. Then he set on it the mountains and plants and animals. All this took another four days. “Then”, i.e. in the last day, after all the above was already done, he erected the sky.

ثُمَّ اسْتَوَى إِلَى السَّمَاء

Is this how the universe is formed? I don’t know how much real science they teach in the schools in the UAE, but this is not the way the universe is formed. According to the above verses, the creation of the world starts with the creation of the Earth. Once the Earth is completed, is filled with plants and animals, it is only then that Allah turns to the sky and lifts it up and adorns it with stars. Any school kid (not being fed with the Islamic nonsense) will tell you this is crazy.

The universe is estimated to be between 13 to 14 billion years old.  The Earth is only 4.5 billion years old. The first micro organisms appeared 3.5 billion years ago. Although soft bodied creatures have appeared 3 billion years ago, the oldest animal fossil found is only 600 million years old. And we are just talking about "multi-celled" organisms such as sponge-like animals, cnidarians, and worms. The dinosaurs appeared during the Jurassic period, approximately 200 million years ago and became extinct over 60 million years ago.

When the universe was in gaseous form, i.e. 13 billion years ago there was no Earth and there were no creatures. The story of the evolution/creation given in the Quran is anachronic and asinine. It has no resemblance to what science says. Every aspect of it is wrong. The verse 12 continues with this potty description of the creation. It says that He (Allah) completed them as seven firmaments in two Days. (Note how often Muhammad forgets that the Quran is supposed to be dictated by Allah and speaks in third person when he refers to him).

What seven heavens? There are no seven heavens. This is fairytale. I explained this point here. Now with the proxy server please read it and also read the article on Shooting Stars. If you can’t still access them, maybe your friend can send them to you by email.

Then Muhammad says that Allah adorned the lower heaven with “lights” (stars).

These are all fairytales. There is nothing scientific in them. Assuming that the smoke of which Muhammad is talking about is the same gaseous form of the early universe, how can you explain all these gobbledygook in the Quran?

All we need to establish that the Quran is not the word of God is ONE error. God should not make even one error. If there is one single error in the entire Quran, this is proof that that book is not from an infallible God. However we find hundreds of errors of all kinds. You are desperate to find miracles in the Quran and try to reinterpret things to confirm your belief. and deliberately overlook the humongous errors in that book.

The image that Muhammad had of the creation of the universe was the same that the ancient people had. Similar tales are repeated in the Bible and can also be found in the lore of the Sumerians, Babylonians and the Canaanites. They thought that the sky is made of seven layers and it is pitched like a dome.  The word اسْتوَى ( erect, raise, stand, hoist, pitch) in this verse shows that Muhammad thought, the sky is a dome that is pitched over the Earth. In the verse 13.2 and 31.10 he even mentions that this sky is raisedwithout any pillars that ye can see”.

These are all scientific fallacies. They are based on the beliefs of primitive people about the Universe. Now you want to take the word smoke and say here Muhammad is talking about the original state of the Universe? This is preposterous.

The Origin of the Smoke

Muhammad is saying that before this dome of sky was raised, everything above the surface of the earth was like smoke. This is not scientific. The origin of this fable can be found in the myths of the Mesopotamians. These stories tell us that after the great god Marduk, slew the serpent of the seas, he cleaved her body and hoisted the upper half as sky. He then firmly fixed the stars, arranging the constellations of the zodiac, and created the moon - "sets him as a creature of night, to make known the days monthly without failing". *  In this way Marduk brought order to the universe. Marduk created seven heavens, and stationed each god (planets revolving around the sun were believed to be gods) to his appropriate sphere. Before that everything was formless and in a state of chaos.

The dragoness goddess Tiamat represents the state of untamed formless universe. She is surrounded by mist and clouds of smoke, principles of disorder.

* Note how Muhammad uses this same very concept to answer people who ask him about the moon: "They ask thee concerning the New Moons. Say: They are but signs to mark fixed periods of time in (the affairs of) men, and for Pilgrimage. 2.189)
