Zaynab and the Beast
“Your marriages were arranged for you by your fathers, but my marriage was arranged for me by Allah from above the seven heavens”
Zaynab to Mohammed’s other wives
The above assertion was Zaynab’s claim to fame, which no other woman had been able to match. Indeed, no other woman was privileged to have her marriage and family life planned for her by Allah, and carefully documented in the preserved tablet and the Quran. Zaynab’s ‘divine’ marriage was not a private matter because its implications still affect the Muslims’ lives today. As a corollary to satisfying Mohammed’s sexual desires, Allah had to ban the highly moral practice of adoption and introduce instead a morally corrupt legislation that allows women to breast feed adult men. Another upshot of this saga is that the Muslims today are still perplexed and divided regarding the wisdom of the ‘barrier (=hijab) verse’ that in effect locks women behind the dark shields of Islam. The historical events mentioned in this article are well documented in the Quran and the reputed sira books and no Muslim can question their authenticity. The analysis, however, is mine and is an attempt to read the small prints to understand that famous Islamic love, or rather lust, story. Zaynab Bintu Jahsh was related to Mohammed from her mother’s side. Being twenty three years younger than Mohammed, he must had seen her many times as a young girl in Mecca, and must had noticed her good looks, which explains why he had chosen her as a wife for Zayd, his adopted son. Zayd Ibn Haritha was an Arab slave who was given as a gift to Khadija, Mohammed’s first wife. Mohammed inherited Zayd after Khadija’s death and because he liked him so much he adopted him. The adoption traditions in Arabia, which were highly respected by all the Arabs, ruled that the adopted children enjoy the same rights as the natural children. Zayd demonstrated exemplary obedience and loyalty to his master and served him with extraordinary devotion. In return Mohammed treated Zayd well; indeed so well that he eventually adopted him. The marriage of Zaynab and Zayd took place in Medina around the year 626 AD when Mohammed was a renowned political leader in Arabia. Some Muslims claim that Zaynab and her brother objected to the marriage on the grounds of the superiority of her class in comparison to that of Zayd. Those Muslims also claim that Zaynab really wished Mohammed to marry her, not Zayd. While it is understandable that Zaynab may have wished to marry Mohammed, who was the most important figure in Medina, there are doubts about the class issues because Zayd, once adopted, had automatically acquired the social class of his adopting father. Besides Zayd was not an African slave but an Arab who was captured in war. The marriage was agreed and the couple lived in a house of their own in Medina. One day, while Zayd was out, Mohammed paid an unexpected visit to the couple. While waiting at the door, a gentle wind blew a light woven curtain revealing a nearly naked figure of Zaynab inside the house. Mohammed was struck by the attractive rounded figure of Zaynab, and went away saying “praise be to Allah who can change how the heart feels”. The meaning of this ‘prayer’ is that Mohammed’s feelings towards Zaynab are now different from what they used to be when he asked her to marry Zayd. In other words, he wasn’t attracted to her before, but now he is. What has changed in Zaynab that made Mohammed feel attracted to her? Obviously, when Mohammed peeped at Zaynab, he did not ‘see’ a change in her personality, but a nearly naked woman with a sexy figure. Zaynab told her husband of what happened and told him what Mohammed was saying as he left. Accidents involving male and female members of the same family seeing each other in embarrassing positions or situations tend to happen in most households. The persons involved try to ignore the recollection or forget it completely without allowing it to have any negative consequences on their lives. What happened at the door of Zaynab shouldn’t have had any far reaching consequences, had the person at the door been a man other than Mohammed. The culture of strict sexual segregation practiced in the Gulf States, and some other Muslim countries, make some Muslims behave like wild sexual beasts. In Saudi Arabia, as an example, the mere sight of a woman’s leg can be considered by some Arabs as an erotic experience. Women without total coverings were described by an Australian Imam as an uncovered meat, in other words, mouth watering meals to would be predators. However, I never came across a man in his fifties, with dozens of wives and slaves at his disposal, who becomes a sexual monster at the sight of his daughter in law. There is nothing unusual for a man to accidentally see his daughter in law in underwear and Zayd shouldn’t have panicked at all because it was nobody’s fault. But Zayd knew something the others didn’t know. He spent a life time with Mohammed and watched him grow from an insignificant person in Mecca to become a formidable leader in Arabia who claims to have links with Allah. Zayd was not a psychoanalyst and had no clue why Allah had chosen his master to become a prophet. Mohammed’s success must have overwhelmed Zayd who didn’t know how to make the connection between all those odd characters of Mohammed. Probably he thought it was all part of the package of being chosen by Allah. Having served Mohammed for years as a slave and then as a son, Zayd had a fairly good knowledge of Mohammed’s characters. He knew what his master liked and how he thought and knew of the sex monster imbedded in his personality. Zayd knew that once Mohammed had a glimpse of Zaynab’s naked figure, no power on earth could stop him from having sex with her. To Zayd, the situation was a battle he was unable and unwilling to fight. Zayd was so confident of his knowledge of the true nature of Mohammed that he had the courage to say to him what would otherwise be unthinkable to say even to an ordinary Arab. Zayd panicked and went out looking for Mohammed until he found him, still preoccupied by his sexual fantasies about Zaynab. Zayd openly said to his adopting father: “perhaps you liked Zaynab, in which case I leave her for you” to which Mohammed responded: “Keep your wife for you”. Of course, Zayd did not mean that Mohammed liked Zaynab as a person but as a sex object. What makes a man to panic and offer his wife to his superior just because he happened to see her in her underwear? It strikes me the enormous amount of fear that generates that courage for a down to earth man like Zayd to say something so improper and so immoral to any man, never mind a prophet of Allah and the chief of Medina! Mohammed’s response is no less decadent. One would expect him to be outraged at the morally offensive offer, but he responded as he would have to a person offering him something to eat: ‘You may keep her!’ It is not that Zayd had guessed that Mohammed liked Zaynab’s figure, he was sure of it because otherwise he wouldn’t dare mentioning it. And it is not that Zayd guessed that Mohammed must be feeling so much lust towards Zaynab, he was sure of it otherwise he wouldn’t dare suggesting to pave the way for Mohammed to have sex with her, by divorcing her. And it is not that Zayd gussed that Mohammed may destroy any person who stands in his way to have sex with Zaynab, he was sure of it otherwise he wouldn’t dare to announce his willingness to hand over his wife, whom he was supposed to protect. And it is not that Zayd guessed that Mohammed will eventually get his way, he was sure of it otherwise he wouldn’t dare to suggest to do something against the adoption laws which Mohammed, until then, recognized. From that moment, Zayd knew that Mohammed would manipulate the laws, or cancel them, in order for him to have sex with Zaynab. After years with him, Zayd developed his own psychological analysis of Mohammed’s personality. Mohammed’s generosity and kindness where always for a purpose, and in Zayd’s case they were because of his extraordinary commitment and total obedience. Zayd knew that he shouldn’t read too much in the fact that he was Mohammed’s adopted son, because even that bondage wouldn’t tame the sex monster Mohammed is. Mohammed’s sexual desires towards Zaynab were not the product of the heat of the moment; weeks later he was still in his world of fantasy about her. He became thoroughly convinced that Zaynab was too endowed to be given to Zayd. As with all other problems Mohammed had ever faced, he had to use Allah to help him out. One afternoon, while relaxing in Aysha’s house, closing his eyes and thinking of that beautiful figure of Zaynab, he came up with an ingenious solution. He opened his eyes with a big smile on his face and said: “who can go to Zaynab and give her the good news? Allah ordered me to marry her”. This is what Allah had to say:وَإِذْ تَقُولُ لِلَّذِي أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَأَنْعَمْتَ عَلَيْهِ أَمْسِكْ عَلَيْكَ زَوْجَكَ وَاتَّقِ اللَّهَ وَتُخْفِي فِي نَفْسِكَ مَا اللَّهُ مُبْدِيهِ وَتَخْشَى النَّاسَ وَاللَّهُ أَحَقُّ أَن تَخْشَاهُ فَلَمَّا قَضَى زَيْدٌ مِّنْهَا وَطَرًا زَوَّجْنَاكَهَا لِكَيْ لَا يَكُونَ عَلَى الْمُؤْمِنِينَ حَرَجٌ فِي أَزْوَاجِ أَدْعِيَائِهِمْ إِذَا قَضَوْا مِنْهُنَّ وَطَرًا وَكَانَ أَمْرُ اللَّهِ مَفْعُولًا
Q.33:37 Behold! Thou didst say to one who had received the grace of Allah and thy favour: "Retain thou (in wedlock) thy wife, and fear Allah." But thou didst hide in thy heart that which Allah was about to make manifest: thou didst fear the people, but it is more fitting that thou shouldst fear Allah. Then when Zaid had dissolved (his marriage) with her, with the necessary (formality), We joined her in marriage to thee: in order that there may be no difficulty to the Believers in marriage with the wives of their adopted sons, when the latter have dissolved with the necessary (formality) (their marriage) with them. And Allah's command must be fulfilled. As usual with translated Quran, the above translation contains serious and deliberate errors, this time, to conceal the rudeness of the original Arabic text. Yusuf Ali, Pikthal and other translators were stuck in the Arabic word ‘watara’ (coloured red) which means desire, want or need. I couldn’t help laughing when I read things like ‘dissolving the marriage’ and ‘divorce formalities’! What formalities were known at the time of Mohammed? A more accurate translation would be: “when Zayd had finished what he wanted from her”. A man’s need for his wife is a lifelong need; there is no time in a successful marriage when a man can say to his wife: “now I had accomplished my want from you” unless that man is speaking about sex. In simple language the above verse says: “as Zayd had finished from Zaynab, now it is your turn”. In a remarkable insensitivity to the suffering of Zayd, who was the main victim of this whole saga, the above verse starts rather impolitely by reminding him with Mohammed’s past favours. There is also a perceptible disrespect to women in general in this verse as evident from the way it referred to Zaynab and relegating the purpose of her marriage to mere sexual activity. Verse 33:37 mirrored what was in Mohammed’s mind about Zaynab, and exposed his lack of integrity and his failure to recognize that Zaynab was a wife to Zayd and not a sex object as he wanted her for himself. The above verse raises another valid and embarrassing question that has no convincing answer. It relates to the part of the verse that says: you feared people and it’s Allah whom you should fear. It is a sin for a Muslim to fear people more than Allah, and in the case of Mohammed that sin contradicted the principle of ‘issma’ or his supposed infallible nature as a prophet. However, the Muslims, who only see miracles in the Quran, come with this explanation: “this verse is a miracle that proves the Quran is from Allah because had Mohammed authored the Quran he wouldn’t write something in it that implicates him”. The Muslims do not grasp the idea that the Quran is Mohammed’s own thoughts spoken loudly. It is normal for people to kick themselves if they feel they made the wrong decision. In the above verse, Mohammed kicked himself because he shouldn’t have let the fear from the public opinion to delay his decision to have Zaynab for himself. Zaynab’s saga is one of those many Islamic issues that lie behind the red line, which Muslims do not like to discuss or debate very often. In their defence, the Muslims say the moral of the story is that Allah wanted to put an end to the practice that prohibited the marriage of the divorced wives of the adopted sons. The Arabs have an old saying that describes this explanation: “the excuse is worse than the offence”. The Muslims become speechless when they are reminded that Allah could have revealed a verse about the new legislation without having to go into that socially damaging scenario. That is of course if we accept that there was something wrong with the old legislation, which there wasn’t. Out of all his marriages, Mohammed celebrated this one the most. A large number of guests were invited to enjoy the free food, courtesy of Mohammed, as the celebrations went on for several days. Mohammed may have regretted that generosity because, one day, after everybody had his food and left, three of the guests stayed behind. Mohammed left them briefly to see his wives and when returned they were still engaged in what seemed like an endless conversation. Mohammed was craving for more time to be on his own with Zaynab and those bad mannered guests were wasting that valuable time. While waiting impatiently for them to leave, Mohammed must had recalled that infamous day when he saw Zaynab in her underwear. He remembered that gentle wind which blew that light woven curtain away revealing Zaynab’s beautiful figure. Suddenly, Mohammed became alarmed in case the same happens again, but with somebody else at the door. Mohammed decided to shield Zaynab, and his other wives, with thick windproof curtains for added protection. Full with greed and selfishness, Mohammed asked for divine help, not only to ask those talking men to leave, but also to stop all his followers from peeping at his wives or marrying them after him. Allah was waiting for Mohammed’s call and immediately revealed this handy and important verse: Q.33:53 “O you who believe! do not enter the houses of the Prophet unless invited for a meal, but not waiting for its cooking being finished, but when you are invited, enter, and when you finished eating then disperse, do not linger for conversation; that would hurt the Prophet, and he would be shy of (asking) you (to go); but Allah is not shy of the truth. And when ye ask of them (the wives of the Prophet) anything, ask it from behind a barrier (a curtain, Arabic for hijab). That is purer for your hearts and for their hearts. And it is not for you to hurt the messenger of Allah, nor that you ever marry his wives after him. That in Allah's sight would be an enormity.” The above verse is now famously known as the Hijab Verse. As we can see it has nothing to do with the hair or head scarves. How many of those Muslims, who read the Quran every day, noticed that? So far, I met none! The end of Zayd Moral principles, ethics and human integrity were all losers in this tale, but Zayd was the main victim because he lost his wife and family life. Unlike Mohammed, Zayd did not consider Zaynab as a sex object, but his only wife and partner and his entire family. He must have struggled with his feelings that it was divine fairness to break down his family, take his only wife and give it to Mohammed, who already had dozens of wives and sexual partners. A blow with that magnitude devastates any man regardless of power or eminence, but just in case it wasn’t harsh enough to dishearten Zayd, Mohammed delivered to him his next shattering blow in the form of this verse: Q.33:4 Q.33: 4 “....nor has He made your adopted sons your sons...” This verse delivered the final blow to Zayd’s only remaining comfort; that warm adoption bondage that was still connecting him with Mohammed. With this verse, Zayd became an abandoned man who did not only lose his wife and father, but also he lost his future and social status. Totally heartbroken and let down by Allah and his messenger, Zayd had to settle with the lie that he too was a winner because his name was mentioned in the Quran. His only option was to live in the shadow of the man who was behind all this, sing his praise and love him more than he loved himself. Q.33: 6 “The Prophet is more worthy to the Believers than their own selves...” As to Mohammed, who got everything he wanted, there remained one tiny blemish that kept spoiling the pleasure of his greed. That was those sad looks from the eyes of Zayd. After his marriage with Zaynab, Mohammed didn’t see in Zayd anything more than a reminder of his insatiable hunger for sex. Zayd, once Mohammed’s favourite slave and adopted son is no longer welcome in the world of Allah’a perfect man. Zayd had to go. In the year 629 AD, Mohammed decided to send Zayd to his final trip. He sent him with a small unprepared and poorly equipped army of around three thousands men to Muta, in present day Jordan. From the beginning, the mission was doomed to fail because of the superiority of the Roman army in numbers and equipment. Mohammed assigned Zayd to hold the flag which made him the first to be targeted by the enemy. The humiliating defeat was no surprise, neither was the fact that Zayd was one of the first to be killed in that battle. And Mohammed lived happily ever after!
The side effect of this
The side effect of this despicable act of the rapist pedophile mohammad is there for every one to see even today! The real son( not adopted son) of a moslem father does not allow his wife( daughter in law) to be alone with his own father. Its not unusual for the father in law to have it off with daughter in law when son is not around.Such animlas are these moslems.Have I come across many families like the one above?Plenty!
I was wondering what happened
I was wondering what happened to Zayd and got my answer today.
But the commenting section needs to be improved in this version of website as it was in the last one. There seems to be very little activity going on.
Poor Zayd.
Poor Zayd.
After Muhammad got Zainab
After Muhammad got Zainab through Allah's fake intervention, poor Zaid must have cursed Mo to the core. I wanted to know the fate of Zaid after that drama. Now I got the answer through this article. If we look into Moghul history, Akbar sent his uncle (his caretaker until he became King) to Afghanistan to fight a bloody battle. As soon as his uncle was killed, Akbar took his (uncle) wife (15 yrs senior to Akbar) to the harem immediately. Akbar followed the footsteps of Muhammad, the pedophile prophet.

Recently in India the father in law of a poor moslem girl, utilised the chance of his son's absence and pounced on his own daughter in law.The moslem community in India was absolutely silent and the kazis said the girl was now the mother of thw original husband and the couple were made to divorce. This is the level of an average moslem in India. Allah is evil to the core. The child rapist mohammad was through and through a rapist and evil
This is a very sad story!
This is a very sad story! The ending reminded me of a different story from the Bible...the one of David and Bashiba (I think that is her name). The difference is that Allah permitted this to happen because Mohammed was/is his prophet while David knew by God's standards he was wrong....nevertheless, there is a similarity due to sexual desire.
Many concepts are excused so that sexual desire is permitted for men in Islam. Muslims say they take 4 wives so no woman will remain unmarried, but those of us intelligent creatures or at least those of us who do not refuse to see the truth know that it is for the sick beasts' sexual desires.
There are marriages (I forget what they are called) in where men are allowed to marry women simply to have sex and if in 24 hours later they choose to divorce them, they are allowed to do so...I know there is a name to this type of marriage. So what then of the poor women who may never be able to marry again....in many cases, they are probably better off.
Also, it is permitted for a Muslim man to freely have sex with khaphir women because we are not Muslim so that makes us free game...lovely!

Kabir, if you accept that your pedophile (can I say this?) Muhammad didn't distinguish between a daughter-in-law and wife for sex, then I am ready to accept that I can distinguish between pube and dikc... You see Mo got the wonderful help of almighty creator of the Universe (Allah) to arrange his marriage with Zainab, his daughter-in-law alias his adopted son's wife. Kabir, are you going to marry your son's wife? Your pedophile Muhammad did that. LOL LOL LOL

Can you talk or do live chatting with me. I think you have a got lot of misconsceptions about Islam. I advice you not to use bad words or foul language against any religion. Be a humanbeing first, and follow the rules of Humanity.. If you have got any doubts about any religion including islam, talk to the person who has got good knowledge about their religion.
I again suggests you to avoid using bad mouth words against my religion ISLAM... Even I can do the same about yours, but Allah and quran does not teach hateredness or revert back in the same manner. Islam teaches to respect all religions irrespective of caste or creed.
I know you are murmuring all these nonsense without having gone through the proper knowledge, and I think you are simply taking some type of revenge by posting all these irrelevants.
Avoid doing all these, and I pray to Allah to make you a good human being first and make your heart and mind clean and remove all the misconceptions about my religion....

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Widespread Child Abuse by Christian Priests
Christian clergy have been under much scrutiny over the last two decades after a long series of immoral scandals involving child abuse. The cases have been shocking, wild, numerous, public, and they keep coming. Recently, an Australian fundamentalist pastor was jailed for incest and child abuse after spending the 1990s sleeping with his own two children in order to 'educate' them. Many cases have been settled out of court, some priests have quit, and some have committed suicide. Police and Western authorities have despaired, because they thought that the Christian churches were good place for children (hence governmental support for faith schools, etc). The situation is so bad that the police have called for routine checks of all priests. No other employer or community has such massive problems with sexual immorality than do Christian organisations; and it seems the stricter they are in their beliefs, the worse their transgressions are - note the born-again paedophile priest who murdered two of his congregation.
"Last year [in 2001] the Pope sent an apology by e-mail for a string of injustices committed by clergy in the Pacific nations, which included priests and missionaries forcing nuns to have sex and then abortions."
"Pope denounces 'evil' sex priests" (BBC News 2002)1
"2% of the priest population can be classified as true pedophiles with a three to one preference for boys. This gender attraction is reversed in the general population. [...] 4% of the priest population become sexually involved with adolescents"2.
Father James Porter victimized 200 minors in the 12 years between 1960 and 1972 when he was active in the priestly ministry. Many of his victims report violent rape, cruel humiliation, and punishment that can only be described as sadistic. [...] One priest who "saw" Porter rape a child defended him, when confronted by a parishioner, with response, "Father is only human." [...] In 1993 he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 18 years in prison for a portion of his offenses. He is one of only a small fraction of priests who have been prosecuted by the law for abuse of minors.
Many priests, even those sent for psychiatric treatment for child abuse, are kept in positions of authority in the Church3. Maybe because the Church is lacking so many priests, and to expel them all would be too damaging to the structure of the Church.
More than a dozen suicides by priests facing public exposure of their sexual activity were recorded between 1990 and 19934.
Christian Churches are often defensive about their views and effect on society, and they have often claimed that claims of sexual abuse (despite the evidence of abuse uncovered by police investigations) are actually attempts to discredit the church, rather than victims finally finding the courage to speak out. Many of the scandals have centered around the way that the Church shuffles accused priests around and hides allegations, even of priests that have been previously convicted in a court of law, often putting them back into supervisory contact with children. The Economist writes in 2002 after Catholic Cardinals and the Pope convened a meeting to discuss the issue, that "dismaying to Catholics is the fact that the hierarchy, in protecting such priests, plainly cared more for the institution of the church than for the souls of its children"5.
The abuse has occurred in communities large and small, in private homes and in church. In 2008, the Pope was apologizing again, this time in person to President Bush, about the extent of the child sex abuse in the Catholic Church6 in the USA, and the Canadian prime minister made an official apology to his indigenous population, because "between 1870 and 1996, an estimated 150,000 indigenous children were wrenched from their homes and sent to Christian boarding schools, where many were sexually and physically abused"7. Not even schools have been safe from the secret violence. The worst frequency of abuse has been when Christians themselves live with other Christians, as we see in the next section:
2. Internal Abuse of Priests - Abuse Leads to Abuse
Much of the sexual abuse within Christian churches is internal, for example between priests and student priests, including seniors ignoring and reprimanding juniors when they complained of sexual abuse, and widespread admittance that the seniors themselves had such experiences as juniors. "After reviewing 473 priests or histories of priests who have [abused children] seventy to eighty percent of [them] have themselves been abused as children, some by priests. Furthermore, a high percentage of those who later abused youngsters - whether or not they themselves were abused as children - were in effect given permission for such activity by a priest or religious superior who himself crossed the sexual boundary with the priest abuser during the time he was studying for ordination. Ten percent of priests report that they were approached sexually by a priest during the time of their theological studies"8. Many have theorized that Christianity's teachings result in a dysfunctional idea of sexuality.
3. The Financial Cost to the Church
The financial cost for Christians Churches has been great. Ongoing claims in Ireland continue to receive news coverage:
“Faith-based welfare was the norm in Ireland up until only a few short years ago. The Catholic Church, in all its compassion, ran schools, orphanages, children's homes, hospitals - just about everything. The result? A catalogue of cruelty and abuse that has left the state with a compensation bill that could run into billions of euros - not to mention thousands of damaged and traumatised individuals who will never properly recover from the physical, mental and sexual torture they suffered at the hands of priests and nuns. In 2002, the Catholic Church agreed to pay over €128m in cash and property to the State as part of a deal to prevent bankruptcy - the actual total is more likely to be between €1bn and €1.3bn. [...]
To date, the average award has been €66,845. Some 23 victims received the maximum award of €300,000. More than 14,500 compensation applications for sexual, emotional or physical abuse were received by the board by the 2005 deadline.”
National Secular Society (2008)9
And, earlier:
“In January, the Catholic Church in Ireland agreed to a $110m payment to children abused by the clergy over decades. More than 20 priests, brothers and nuns have been convicted of molesting children.
The US archdiocese of Boston has agreed to pay between $15m and $30m to scores of people to settle claims that a priest sexually abused them when they were children.”
"Pope denounces 'evil' sex priests" (BBC News 2002)1
In the USA there have been massive costs resulting from legal cases. The USA LA Catholic Church has paid five hundred victims a total of $660m to settle cases dating from the 1940s. In 2008 alone, the Catholic Church in the USA paid $436 million in costs resulting from sexual abuse by clergy10. In the USA at least, such massive criminal abuse has led to some Churches contemplating bankruptcy, as long ago as 1993:
“In 1993, two archdioceses, Chicago and Santa Fe, declared themselves in danger of bankruptcy due, at least in part, to compensation paid to victims of clergy abuse. Dioceses and religious orders have also paid for legal expenses involved in defending priests and themselves in civil and criminal suits in connection with child abuse, as well as treatment costs for the psychiatric care of priest perpetrators. Compensation, treatment, and legal costs are estimated to have passed the half-billion mark between 1984 and 1994 (Wojcik, 1994).”
"Sex, Priests and Power: Anatomy of a Crisis" by Richard Sipe (1995)11
And LA's Catholic Church in 2003:
“The accounts for the last fiscal year, which ended in June 2003, showed a deficit not of $4.3m, as had been predicted, but of $13.4m. Critics of the new cathedral, which cost $190m, were quick to place blame, but [...] about half of the deficit, $7.7m, was a one-off settlement of claims of sexual abuse by priests. [...] Some 300 claims of abuse in Los Angeles are under investigation. Ten priests already face charges.”
The Economist (2003)12
4. The Long Shadow: Ancient Christian Sexual Abuse
Although the legal cases of the past few decades have raised public awareness about paedophile priests, the problem is ancient. The oldest existing commentary on the Christian gospels, the Didaché of the early second century, found it necessary to command that "thou shalt not seduce young boys". Richard Sipe continues by highlighting a trend that has been reflected in church texts since the second century:
“The earliest church council for which we have any records, that of Elvira in 309, has 81 Canons, of which 38 deal with sex. [...] Among those who are threatened with irrevocable exclusion - that is, they could not receive communion even at the time of death (nec in finem) are "bishops [...] committing a sexual sin" (Canon 18), "those who sexually abuse boys" (Canon 71).”
"Sex, Priests and Power: Anatomy of a Crisis" by Richard Sipe (1995)13
The problems of the ancient church and its grasp of practical sexual morality mirrors shortcomings that Christian churches have today. In the 2nd and 3rd centuries it was noted that sexual offenders moved from one Christian province to another even after they had been excommunicated for their abuse14. This was sometimes the cause of scandals; the same movement of abusive priests has caused outrage in the press in recent decades15.
Breaking into the second millennium of Christianity, the same problems continue. One record I stumbled across in the accounts of the historian Will Durant concerned sex crime cases from 1499. "Clerical offenders numbered 23 per cent of the total, though the clergy were probably less than 2 per cent of the population"16. Attempts at reform have been useless. The Council of Trent (1545-63) was held in order to curb abuses in the Church. Pope Julius III presided over this council for three years from 1550. The same pope entered a sexual liaison with a 15-year-old boy he had picked up on the streets of Parma13. The omens were clearly not good for the success of that council. That such abuse has been endemic within Christian institutions for so long points to something fundamentally wrong with Christian teachings on sexuality.
Unfortunately, we should follow these historical abstractions with solid examples from our present time, in order to make it clear what types of behaviour we are talking about:

Archdiocese of Boston hid accused priests (Fox News 2002)The Archdiocese of Boston in the USA became infamous for the scale of paedophile abuse (and other criminal behaviour) of its Christian clergy. There was an organized and determined extended cover-up over a long period of time involving many of the clergy, all of whom acted to protect each other rather than protect future and past victims. One of the factors that has caused most outrage is the standard procedure where paedophile priests were simply moved to a different location after victims came to light. The news articles linked on the right provide a seemingly endless stream of stubborn offence, re-offence and acts of looking-the-other-way. At the height of the revelations in the first half of 2002, the number of priests who left their post or were removed, numbered 200 out of a total of 46 000 priests in the USA17. That's half a percent of all priests, in just half a year. Sipe, who wrote a book on the issue, found in 1995 that a full 2% of all priests are paedophiles2, with the additional data uncovered in 2002, that looks more likely to be an astounding 3%.
“Over 800 complaints of sexual abuse had been lodged against priests in 2008. However, only 10 of those complaints involved recent activity; most of the complaints involved alleged offenses in the 1960s and 1970s, and nearly all of the priests accused are deceased, retired, or otherwise inactive. Several dioceses declined to participate fully in the audits and child-protection programs suggested by the staff of the bishops' conference. Bishop Fabian Bruskewitz of Lincoln, Nebraska, has consistently refused to allow audits.”
National Secular Society (2009)10
Seven years earlier:
“Thousands of newly released personnel files show that the Archdiocese of Boston went to great lengths to hide priests accused of abuse, including clergy who allegedly snorted cocaine and had sex with girls aspiring to be nuns. The first round of the documents — roughly 3,000 pages on eight Roman Catholic priests — were made public Tuesday on a Superior Court order. They [...] included allegations that clergy sexually abused teenage girls and used cocaine and other drugs, and that one led a "double life" by carrying on an affair with a female parishioner.
Many of the priests whose files were released are not among the 400 clergy members targeted in the dozens of lawsuits against the archdiocese. But attorneys for plaintiffs hope the documents show the archdiocese had a habit of transferring priests to other parishes even after accusations of child abuse.”
"Archdiocese of Boston hid accused priests" (Fox News 2002)
Another seven years earlier:
“Several accounts already record the extent, history and struggles of the sexual abuse of minors by priests in the United States (Berry, 1992; Burkett & Bruni, 1993; Rossetti, 1990; Sipe, 1990a). [...] A quick review of the alleged priest abusers who have come to legal attention demonstrates the trend: 10 priests of a total of 97 in a Southwestern diocese; 9 of 110 in a Midwestern diocese; 7 of 91 in a Southern diocese; 15 of 220, and 40 in a diocese of 279 in the Eastern United States. [...] Sixty Catholic priests and brothers were in prison on sexual abuse charges as of September 1994.”
"Sex, Priests and Power: Anatomy of a Crisis" by Richard Sipe (1995)2
One of the latest summaries is that of the famous liberal, Bishop John Selby Spong, in 2009, who admits that despite the horrific events that have been uncovered so far, there is more to come:
“There was a history of bishops and archbishops moving offending clergy to another jurisdiction rather than confronting the issue. [... If] the abuse and the cover-up were quite systemic, [...] it must have involved people in high places, including bishops, archbishops and cardinals. [...] I do not [...] believe that thus far there has been anything like a full disclosure, so the issue will not end yet.”
Retired Bishop John Selby Spong (2009)18
5.2. Ireland
The Economist (2009)19"In Ireland, an inquiry found that, over six decades, child abuse had been endemic at many Catholic institutions for boys. The head of the Irish Catholic church said he was profoundly sorry".
Pope denounces 'evil' sex priests (BBC News 2002)"In January, the Catholic Church in Ireland agreed to a $110m payment to children abused by the clergy over decades. More than 20 priests, brothers and nuns have been convicted of molesting children".
Paedophile cases haunt the church (BBC News 2000)52 schools, run by Catholic religious orders, that took in children that were either very troublesome, or the offspring of parents who were too poor to look after them, have all been closed in Ireland. The Irish government launched an inquiry into abuse at these 'industrial' schools. The Christian Brothers, who ran some of these schools, "have also been implicated in sex scandals in Canada. More than 300 former pupils at Mount Cashel orphanage, Newfoundland, have alleged the lay brothers abused them".
5.3. United Kingdom (UK)

Police investigating that a known paedophile resumed as a priest in 1985 (BBC News 2000)
Catholic church shaken by sex scandals (BBC News 2002)The United Kingdom has seen many cases of paedophile priests, including many cases where Bishops and other senior Christians have protected paedophiles, moving them from post to post when accusations surface.
Child abuse priest housed by Church (BBC News 2002)
Archbishop defends paedophile move (BBC News 2000)Father Michael Hill was a known paedophile, who was jailed for a 20-year span of sexual child abuse. "Archbishop Cormac Murphy-O'Connor ignored the advice of doctors and therapists that Father Michael Hill would carry on assaulting children" and reinstated him in 1985. Father Michael Hill then went on to indecently assault more altar boys before being jailed in 1997. His other victims included retards and homeless boys. When he was released, the Church again took him back under its wing, and he lived rent-free in a £100,000 flat a few minutes from a primary school. The Church argued that it wanted him to be in a position where they could supervise him, but I rather think that the Church is last organisation I'd trust to 'supervise' a paedophile, and, that when people give to church they'd rather their money went to good causes. Not many working people can even afford such a flat!
UK Church ignoring rules on child abuse (BBC News 1999)An investigation a year earlier, in 1999, found similar results: "An investigation for Radio 5 Live found one priest under investigation who was still working. Another, recently suspended, was allowed to work in a primary school while under suspicion of abusing children. He had been accused of abuse twice before. Since 1996, six priests have been convicted of child abuse. In each case, the church knew of previous allegations". This was before the horrific explosion of exposés that occurred in 2002, when the world truly learnt that paedophilia and child abuse was rife within the Christian hierarchy.
Clergy suicide during sex abuse investigation (The Guardian 2003)John Pugh, 54 was a minister of the United Reformed church in Stowmarket, Suffolk. Accused of indecently assaulting a teenage boy on multiple occasions, he committed suicide rather than try to defend himself in court.
Child porn charge priest in court (BBC News 2002)
Priest jailed on child porn charge (BBC News 2003)The Dean of Reading, the Catholic priest "Michael O'Kelly, 46, appeared at Newbury Magistrates Court on Wednesday charged with possessing indecent photographs of children" (BBC News 2002). He was found with 18,000 indecent photographs of children that were "disturbing, degrading and disgusting" and spent up to £1500 a month downloading these images and talking in chat rooms. He described it as his "guilty secret" and said he couldn't control it.
Eight years' jail for sex priest (BBC News 2000)"Father Jordan, who was Cardiff City Football Club's chaplain, kept a hoard of hard core child porn on a personal computer at his presbytery in St Helen's church, Barry". This Roman Catholic priest was eventually convicted for 8 years for a "string of sex offences" including indecent assault. But a major complication was the fact that when the investigation started, someone in the Church warned him a week before he was arrested. He used the time to hide evidence - it was months after the (first) trial before police knew of the Priests computer, which contained hundreds of pictures of boys.
Abuse inquiry at top Catholic school (BBC News 2000)Father David Martin was a chaplain at Catholic school in London. An investigation into 6 cases of abuse in the attached Church follows even though he died from a disease related to a STD which he was alleged to also have passed on to two of his victims.
Paedophile cases haunt the church (BBC News 2000)"In October 1999, Pope John Paul II sacked Father John Lloyd, who raped a 16-year-old girl and indecently assaulted two altar boys in south Wales".
Paedophile priest jailed (BBC News 1998)The paedophile Roman Catholic priest, Father Eric Taylor, was convicted on 16 charges of indecent assault. He worked at an Orphanage in Staffordshire. He already had previous convictions for indecent assault in 1975, where he abused four boys at his vicarage. Some of his victims had committed suicide "because they could not live with what the priest had done to them".
5.4. France
Bishop kept quiet over paedophile (BBC News 2001)I only have one file on record for France, but it reveals that in 2001 there were "19 priests under investigation for rape or sexual assault on minors". 30 had been convicted "in recent years" of those offences. It is astounding how such practices and abuses can continue within the Church. The first French Bishop to ever appear in the dock was Monsignor Pican, who admitted lying to conceal the activity of a paedophile priest, Father Rene Bissey, who had raped and abused at least 11 young boys. The Bishop sent the priest for psychiatric help and moved him to a different nearby parish. It is hard to imagine why Priests and Bishops protect each other even when it means that innocent young children suffer from serious sexual abuse. The climate of sexual repression that stems from Christian beliefs is to blame both the resulting deviancy of priests, and the astounding ineptitude of Christian authorities in dealing with sexual abusers in its ranks. It seems that the teachings of Christian Churches on sexuality are rooted more in delusion than in truth, and this leads both to deviancy and the inability to manage deviants.
5.5. Austria
Bishop defiant over sex scandal (BBC News 2004)
Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer: Disgraced Archbishop of Vienna (Independent 2003)
Austrian bishops label cardinal a paedophile (BBC News 1998)
Austrian bishops want Vatican action on Cardinal accused of molestation (BBC News 1998)A head of Austria's Catholic Church, Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer, was accused of sexually molesting boys and monks. He resigned in 1995 over it (after being in his post for 9 years), and died, disgraced, in 2003, still unrepentant. The Vatican itself investigated the claims and found them "in essence" to be true. In 1998 Feb, a bishop apologised for everything Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer "and other church dignitaries" had done.
“Hubertus Czernin, who published a book on the case, Das Buch Groer, in 1998, said he believed that Groer had abused more than 2,000 young men. "His sexual harassment began in the 1950s, continued in the Sixties, the Seventies, the Eighties and even in the Nineties," Czernin said later. "The last case I know of was in 1996, when he was an old man and had already been kicked out as Archbishop of Vienna but had returned to his monastery in Lower Austria."”
"Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer: Disgraced Archbishop of Vienna"
The Independent newspaper (2003)
500,000 Catholics in Austria signed a petition against the Catholic Church's stance on sexuality, women and homosexuality, all of which are intolerant and repressive (two things that also lead to sexual deviancy). Whatever lessons the public learnt from this, the Church itself continued in its unfortunate ways and within a few years, another scandal came to light. In yet another case of unlikely naivety, Bishop Kurt Krenn says that the 40,000 sexual images were 'a prank'.
“Several pressure groups have called on Bishop Kurt Krenn to quit, after child pornography was allegedly found at a Catholic priests' training college. [...] As many as 40,000 sexual images were allegedly found, but Bishop Krenn has dismissed them as a "schoolboy prank". Officers confiscated computer hard drives from the seminary at St Poelten, about 80km (50 miles) west of [...Vienna]. The news magazine Profil said photographs showed senior clerics kissing and fondling trainees. Pictures of children were also allegedly found. [...] The director of the seminary, Ulrich Kuechl, has already resigned, as has his deputy Wolfgang Rothe. The Austrian Church has not forgotten a previous sex scandal, when Cardinal Hans Hermann Groer was replaced in 1995 amid allegations that he had molested young boys.”
"Bishop defiant over sex scandal" (BBC News 2004)
5.6. Hong Kong
HK investigates new child abuse claims (BBC News 2002)
More HK priests accused of abuse (BBC News 2002)“The Roman Catholic Church in Hong Kong says two more priests have been accused of sexually abusing children, days after three clergymen were accused of a similar offence. [...] Reverend Lee told the Post the alleged abuses took place over the past 11 years. The Church had previously said they happened over three decades.”
"More HK priests accused of abuse" (BBC News, 2002)
After these initial complaints, the police's special hotline resulted in the recording of many more historical cases that had not previously been investigated. "Superintendent Shirley Chu told reporters the three new cases allegedly took place in the 1960s and 1970s and involved boys studying at secondary schools".
“Since the Hong Kong allegations broke, Church officials there have referred serious cases to the police, saying they are adopting a "zero tolerance" policy toward sexual abuse of children.”
"HK investigates new child abuse claims" (BBC News, 2002 May 15)
It seems that the Church in all quarters of the world has a policy of covering for their abusive fellows rather than reporting them to the police in order to protect children. In Hong Kong, a public outcry followed revelations that the church had not reported cases of abuse that it had itself known about the abuse much earlier. The priest Michael Lau was found by a Church investigation to have molested a boy on two occasions in 1994 (eight years earlier). This institution which looks after itself and its own rather than protect children in its care, the Catholic Church, runs 300 schools and nurseries in Hong Kong.
5.7. Australia
Priest involved in rampant pedophilia (The Australian 2009)
Pope to apologise for clergy abuse in Australia (The Guardian 2008)
Fundamentalist Christian pastor jailed for child abuse & incest (2007)
Australian Church apologises to child migrants (BBC News 2001)“Australia's Roman Catholic Church publicly apologised on Thursday to British and Maltese child migrants who suffered abuse including rape, whippings and slave labour in religious institutions. [...] Some children were told that were going on a holiday. [...] Two church bodies said the programme, in which more than 1,000 British and 310 Maltese children were sent to Australian Catholic schools between the late 1930s and 1960s, resulted in "suffering and dislocation". Many children were raped, whipped, stripped of their names and forced to scramble for food thrown on the floor. Some children were also made to do hard labour, including construction work, at some schools.
The inquiry found that migrant children were subjected to systematic abuse in religious schools in Australia, New Zealand and other countries.”
"Australian Church apologises to child migrants" (BBC News, 2001)
Well after the revelations of the Catholic Church's horrendous activities in Australia in the 1930s to 1960s, continued cases have came to light. So many that in 2008 July, Pope Benedict XVI has himself gone to Australia to apologize for the behaviour of his priesthood there. More cases have emerged amongst Priests from various denominations. Australian Catholic Priest Brian Joseph Spillane finds himself accused of seemingly endless abuses of teens and pre-teens in various circumstances (i.e., in the confessional box and at a Catholic boarding school), between 1971 and 1990. In another case, a Pastor from a (non-Catholic) Protestant church was caught out in the 1990s. Some news excerpts:
“MOLESTING girls in the confessional box and raping hypnotised boys was part of a pattern of "rampant pedophilia" by a former priest accused of sexually assaulting youngsters, a Sydney court has been told. Brian Joseph Spillane, a former chaplain at St Stanislaus College in Bathurst, [...] has been charged with an additional 29 counts of indecently assaulting 11 males and females, bringing the total number of charges against the former priest to 146. [...] Ms Walker said Mr Spillane sexually assaulted both boys and girls between 1971 and 1990 during his time at both St Stanislaus boys' school in NSW's central west and St Anthony's parish at Marsfield, in Sydney's north. [...] Mr Spillane is accused of serious offences including anal intercourse and group rape at the Bathurst boarding school, Ms Walker said. Teachers at St Stanislaus "hypnotised boys for the purpose of having sexual intercourse with them'', she told the court.”

“A pastor from a South Australian fundamentalist church has been jailed for eight-and-a-half years after admitting he had sex with two of his teenage daughters [...and] pleaded guilty to seven counts each of incest and unlawful sexual intercourse. The court heard that the man had sex with his daughters for nearly a decade in the 1990s at the family property. The man later told the court he had sex with the girls to "educate" them on how to be good wives - not for his own gratification.”

6. Christian Teachings on Sexuality Cause Sexual Dysfunction
Dr Frederick Berlin, an expert on sexual disorders who has acted as a consultant for the US church, has found there is no particular trend for people who are already paedophiles to join the Christian priesthood20. In other words, it is their development within the Church that leads priests into acts of (sometimes violent) sexual indecency against children. The situation is so bad that the police have called for routine checks of all priests. No other employer or community has such massive problems with sexual immorality than do Christian organisations. The problem is correlated with strictness; the most liberal churches have seen far fewer cases in proportion to their size than have fundamentalist or even mainstream churches. In other words, as Christian ideas of sexuality are taken more seriously, the incidence of sexual dysfunction increases. These are not new problems - Church councils since the very first centuries have discovered that Christianity goes hand in hand with sexual panic, and in the records of some of the earliest Church convenes, we find an extensive and almost all-consuming focus upon matters of sexuality and of transgressions by practitioners. There is something fundamentally wrong with what the Bible teaches on sexuality - their (often violent) intolerance of homosexuality is only the tip of the iceberg. My page on religion and sexuality highlights this problem for religion in general:
“Psychologists and sociologists have noted the association between extreme religious fervour and psycho-sexual problems (the former causing the latter), and the highly negative stance that many monotheistic religions take towards sexuality in general have contributed to a general malaise amongst their lay adherents, and a serious pandemic of abuse amongst professional religionists. The religious attitude towards religion is to behave like an ostrich and stick its head in the sand, hoping that theology can override biological truth, but merely making its victims unable to cope with adult sexuality. Witness the hateful and confusing statements that Christians and Muslims make about homosexuals, the anti-contraception stance that the Catholic church has in an over-crowded world ridden with disease, the harmful and simplistic rejection of abortion and the patriarchal dominance over women that has gone hand-in-hand with traditional religion on every continent.”
"The Peacock vs. the Ostrich - Religious Behaviour and Sexuality" by Vexen Crabtree (2008)
Some within Christian academia have come to some similar conclusions:
“Catholic piety has required the repression of healthy sexuality for service in this institution. Unfortunately, when healthy sexuality is repressed, unhealthy sexuality always rises. Repressed sexuality comes back as pornography and child abuse. Perhaps the place where Rome ought to begin is to ask why sexual abstinence or celibacy is a prerequisite for leadership. I think that is where sickness enters the tradition.”
Retired Bishop John Selby Spong (2009)18
7. Aren't Satanists Supposed to be the Child Abusers?
The Christian church talks about doing good but now its dirty secrets are out. There is one diabolical organisation that has suffered an opposite fate: frequently accused (falsely, so far) of ritual child abuse, the Church of Satan has watched the truth emerge about Christian priests with a jaded feeling of I knew it! Its high priest, Peter Gilmore, wrote "who can ignore the continuing media-touted scandal of child molestation perpetrated by Christian clergymen?" in his essay The Tide Turns in 1994.21.
8. Conclusions
Child abuse and paedophilia has been a particular problem for Christian institutions. It seems that the Church's teachings on sexuality, and the general restrictions of the strict teachings of Christian churches, lead to a development of sexual dysfunction amongst its priests. Christian Churches, the biggest example being the Catholic Church, have fought to conceal paedophile priests and move them from place to place when allegations arise. They have tried to deal with paedophilia by sending priests on sick leave or to rehabilitation centres ran by other Christians, but, it appears that Christian hierarchies are the last places you should trust when it comes to dealing with sexual abnormality. The scale of the scandals has led to various Churches declaring themselves bankrupt as they attempt to pay some of the court costs and settlement fees demanded of them. No other industry - even those closely associated with children such as boarding schools - has a rate of abuse anywhere near the rate found amongst Christian clergy. Counting is difficult, but, around 3% of all priests appear to be prone to recurring sexual indecency with children.
My main recommendations are:
That Christian institutions cease running organisations that deal with children such as schools and orphanages. Secular managers should be appointment to oversee any institutions that are mostly staffed by Christians.
That Christian teachings on sexuality are viewed as a historical form of idealism, like communism or fascism, which has unfortunately failed on moral and pragmatic grounds.
The whole idea of Christian-ran schools be reconsidered.

The Catholic Church is now counting the cost of the revelations of sexual abuse by priests.
The growing scandal on both sides of the Atlantic has created a crisis of trust for the church, with claims that senior clerics failed to take action for years.
In Ireland, victims of abuse by priests have called for the resignation of the Archbishop of Dublin, Cardinal Desmond Connell. The government has ordered an inquiry.
The damage has been immeasurable, the toll is tremendous
Bishop Wilton Gregory
In England and Wales, the church has set up a national child protection unit. It follows the publication last year of the Nolan Report, which called for the "great evil" of child abuse to be rooted out.
In the United States, some dioceses have already paid out millions of dollars to settle law suits brought by victims. And the abusers are now being dealt with by the criminal courts.
In New York, the church has handed prosecutors a list of priests suspected of abusing children. And in Boston, a "zero tolerance" policy is now in force.
Tarnished
The allegations of abuse have created a climate of mistrust that has tarnished the reputation of the church.
Cardinal Connell: Demands for him to resign
The perception that church leaders have kept quiet about the problem has increased public anger over the activities of a small minority of their priests.
In the past, a priest who prompted complaints might have been moved quietly to a different area.
"Initially, the church viewed sexual offences as sins to be confessed, rather than a sickness to be treated," says Father Curtis Bryant, a psychologist who has treated American priests.
"Catholic authorities liberally forgave and trusted the offending priest, as they would any penitent, instead of putting him out of ministry."
Father Bryant is a former director of inpatient clinical services at the St Luke Institute in Maryland. It is one of the few centres in the United States that treats priests who are sexual abusers.
Treatment
Writing in the Catholic magazine America, Father Bryant argues that sending people who need treatment to the criminal justice system is ineffective and inhumane.
There is no screening that would identify a paedophile
Dr Frederick Berlin
"So-called zero tolerance policies can lead to conduct unbecoming a loving Christian community," he says.
"We need to find ways to meet the legitimate concerns of the criminal justice system and the ability of mental health treatments to make sex offenders responsible for their behaviour."
Priests undergo a six-month period of treatment at the clinic, to help them understand their sexual disorders.
"The priest acknowledges that he does have a sexual problem," he writes.
"He acknowledges that his sexual disorder cannot be cured but can be treated, cannot be eliminated but can be controlled."
Father Bryant says that out of 450 priests who have undergone treatment over a ten-year period, only three "relapses" have been reported, and none involved physical contact.
Healing
So how should the church now deal with sexual abusers in its midst? Recent revelations have shocked many parishes.
Lord Nolan: "Root out child abuse"
They have also left many non-abusing priests feeling that they are now under suspicion.
And among gay members of the clergy, there is concern that they will be seen as part of the problem.
The US Conference of Catholic Bishops says that while priority should be given to helping victims and their families, there needs to be a wider process of healing.
And whatever may have happened in the past, priests who have offended against children should never return to any ministry that includes minors.
But what about the next generation of priests? Can more be done to prevent paedophiles from entering the priesthood?
Checks
Dr Frederick Berlin, an expert on sexual disorders who has acted as a consultant for the US church, has found no evidence that paedophiles are particularly drawn to the priesthood.
"There is no screening that would identify a paedophile," he says.
So-called zero tolerance policies can lead to conduct unbecoming a loving Christian community
Father Curtis Bryant
"We can do some common sense things, such as background checks. We can provide more treatment so that paedophiles can get help.
"But there is no way that we can identify ahead of time a paedophile who has not previously been identified, and who wants very much to keep secret his own sexual yearnings."
But the church knows action is needed to restore public confidence in the priesthood.
"While we deplore the sexual abuse of young people, especially that committed by a cleric, we are confident that the numbers of priests involved in such criminal activity are few," says the president of the US Conference, Bishop Wilton Gregory.
"The damage, however, has been immeasurable. The toll this phenomenon has taken on our people and our ministry is tremendous.
"This is a time for Catholic people, bishops, clergy, religious and laity, to resolve anew to work together to assure the safety of our children."

Magh Shuddha Ashthami
Chennai: A 35-year-old priest was arrested by the suburban police on Tuesday on charges of molesting a woman within a church at Madhavaram
According to police officials, the woman, a recent convert to Christianity, came to the church at 8.45 am and locked herself in a room. When others asked for her to come out she refused. The priest, with whom she was said to be on good terms, then asked her to let him in. She agreed.
The two came out 45 minutes later. The woman was allegedly bleeding from her hand and lips. When others asked her about it, she alleged that the priest had molested her and beat her up.
The police, based on the woman's complaint, took the priest into custody. He was booked under IPC Sections 341, 324 and 506 (2).
A police official said, "We suspect the priest misbehaved with her inside the church. We have registered a case against him and are investigating."

Kerala priest, film director, politician held for minor’s rape

KOCHI (Kerala): The Kerala police on Friday arrested a Christian priest, a film director and a politician for the alleged rape and abuse of a minor girl.
The arrested included Father Kuriakose Mangalath, film director Rajan Sithara, and Kerala Congress (Joseph) party activist Shibhu.
While Sithara was arrested by a special investigation team (SIT) in Thrissur, the other two were taken into custody from Kottayam.
The case pertains to 2002, when a 17-year-old girl came to Kochi in search of work. She fell into a trap of sex racketeers and was allegedly abused by a large number of people. The victim also alleged that pornographic films were made using her.
The girl was later arrested in Thoppumpadi near Kochi. Since then, the case has hit the headlines as Thoppumpadi sex scandal.
The police, based on the statement of the victim, has listed names of 69 people who had abused her when she was a minor and arrested 13 of them. The list reportedly has several high-profile names.
The investigations later went into a limbo and all the 13 arrested people were granted bail.
In 2006, the girl’s mother moved the Kerala Hight Court, which appointed the SIT.

Suit accuses priest of molesting 2 girls
By Jeffrey M. Barker Record Staff Writer The Record Sunday, January 30, 2005
Stockton -- A lawsuit charging a former Stockton priest with molesting two girls while visiting their home has been scheduled for trial next month in San Joaquin County Superior Court.
CHILD MOLESTER CHRISTIAN PRIEST ALSO STOLE, CHURCH SAYS
Ousted priest also stole, church says The buttociated Press The Daily News October 30, 2004 Seattle -- A former Roman Catholic priest ousted from ministry for molesting boys diverted thousands of dollars...
The suit against the Rev. Francis Arakal and the Diocese of Stockton accuses the priest of fondling two girls in 2001. It also charges another priest and the church with reacting inappropriately when one of the girls attempted to report the molestation.
"Very rarely do these cases get to the point where trials are set," said Anthony Boskovich, a San Jose attorney representing the two girls, who are sisters, and their mother. All three live in Hughson.
Arakal is listed as a parochial vicar for St. Joseph's Church in Modesto.
Attorneys for the Stockton diocese -- Paul Balestracci and Vladimir Kozina, both of Stockton -- and for Arakal, Michael Coughlan of Stockton, each declined to comment on the case.
The case, filed in September 2002, described molestation that allegedly took place in 2001, when the girls were 11 and 13 years old. It accuses Arakal of touching the breasts of the older girl, and both the breasts and pelvic area of the younger girl during a visit to their home.
What's unique about the case, according to Boskovich and co-counsel George MacKoul of Falmouth, Mbutt., is how the church handled the incidents when they were reported.
On Sept. 11, 2001, the 13-year-old girl reported the acts in a confessional to Father Joseph Illo, another priest at St. Joseph's Church in Modesto, the lawsuit said. Violating the confidentiality of the confessional, Illo brought the girl before Arakal.
During a conversation, the priests browbeat the girl and called her a liar, according to the lawsuit. At one point, attorneys say, Illo told the girl, "All your mother wants to do is have love with me."
"They terrorized the girl to the point that she was hyperventilating and couldn't move," Boskovich said.
After the confrontation, Arakal "began a systematic campaign sic of harbuttment" of the girls' mother, the lawsuit states.
"They have essentially been ostracized by their church," Boskovich said.
Arakal, 51, was born in India. He came to the United States in 1998, working first at St. Peter's Parish in Lemoore, under the Diocese of Fresno, and later at St. Joseph's Parish in Modesto, where he still works.
The attorneys have sued Illo before, in a defamation suit.
The mother has also charged both priests "libeled and slandered" her name and reputation, questioning her "chasbreasty, mental capacity and personality."
Responding to that charge, the church delivered to Bishop Stephen E. Blaire an internal investigation that concluded Illo might benefit from counseling on gender boundaries because he is "an attractive man, physically, spiritually and socially." It also recommended a review of Illo's management style.
But the report was much more critical of the mother, suggesting she was at fault for "continued and frustrating attempts at establishing relationships," "the inclusion of her own minor children in the management of adult relationships," and for demanding leadership positions within the church.
The report recommended the mother seek counseling "for dealing with her current state in life."
Boskovich and MacKoul said attorneys for Arakal and the diocese are trying to have the trial delayed, a move they oppose.
