The Terrorist Next Door?

Printer-friendly versionPrinter-friendly versionSend to friendSend to friendPDF versionPDF version Dr. Laina Farhat-Holzman We haven’t had another al Qaeda attack since 9/11, but not because they haven’t tried. Fortunately, we and the Europeans have apprehended wannabe terrorists with regularity. The FBI is better than we give it credit for – and the wannabes stupider than they think they are. However, there are some new wrinkles that should make us all uneasy. The most recent arrests are a case in point. On July 27th, seven Americans were arrested in North Carolina for terrorist activities – one of them a very American, boy-next-door sort of middle-class fellow, a convert to Islam. He was so fanatical that he was willing to send both of his sons as suicide bombers to Israel (where the Israelis foiled them). Daniel Patrick Boyd would never be profiled as a Muslim terrorist (too old, too Anglo-Saxon looking), but my suspicious would have been aroused by his wife, also an American convert, who met the press in total hijab (a burka), showing only her eyes through slits. This should be a red flag to any security agents – not only a red flag because of fanatical religiosity, but because such clothing can hide a multitude of evils: suicide belts, males evading capture, or weapons. French President Sarkozy lit into burka-wearing as a symbol of female suppression, he says, not a religious requirement (Islam only mandates modesty, not invisibility). But I am sure he also recognizes the utility of hijab to terrorists. Jordan leads the world in crimes committed using burkas (including suicide bombers) with England coming in second. This is a serious issue. This past year alone has seen a number of arrests and convictions of home-grown terrorists:
  • A convert from Long Island gave al Qaeda detailed information about Long Island trains and New York City subways (which would reap very bloody death tolls).
  • A plot by prison converts to Islam to blow up two synagogues and a National Guard plane in upstate New York – they’ll be going on trial shortly.
  • A plot to kill hundreds of soldiers at Fort Dix by assimilated American Muslims who have been living here for 25 years – all of them convicted by a jury.
  • A plot to operate a terrorist training camp in Oregon (all pleaded guilty).
  • And perhaps most distressing: young Somali teenagers brought up in the U.S., recruited by al Qaeda, and sent overseas to become suicide bombers (two of whom have already died in such attacks).
We have long thought that American Muslims, unlike those in Europe, do not have grievances such as exclusion from civil society, welfare-supported life in ghettos, and failure to thrive in the larger society. None of this is true in the United States, and analysts had believed that we are doing a much better job of integrating our Muslim immigrants. No one could have been more surprised than the Minneapolis Somali community when their children were seduced and sent to their deaths by murderous Islamist Pied Pipers. The young men just disappeared, without a word to their families. Their mosque claimed ignorance of any recruiting, which is difficult to believe. North Carolina appears to be a nexus for terrorist activity, although cells are nationwide. Cigarette-smuggling by one terrorist group had laundered nearly $8 million to support Hezbollah. Most notorious is Sami Al-Arian, a former professor in Florida, who unconvincingly claimed innocence of funding Hezbollah and of planning terror attacks all over the U.S., focusing on military bases and universities where they could maximize the mayhem. He ultimately confessed and was deported rather than serve in prison. Counterterrorism is now at the top of FBI missions, unlike before 9/11. Most dangerous are the converts, who are declared “nice folks” by their clueless neighbors until their weapons caches are found. Our watchdogs have kept us safe so far, but at least one attack will succeed. Militant Islam will eventually play itself out, but meanwhile, it is folly to either underestimate or overestimate this enemy. The Terrorist Next Door is just who al Qaeda wants to recruit. Every followers of muhammed's

Every followers of muhammed's satanic verses is a potential criminal. How long we keep on turning a blind eye to Islam? We never need to know whether other religions like buddhist or bahai etc are 'peaceful' or not.
Islam is the only wolf trying to show that it is sheep among religions.

Umm, no surprise there.
In the UK we have had two investigative reports "Undercover Mosque" I and II into what is being taught and promulgated in British mosques.
In both they found:
Islamic "teachers" and preachers preaching hatred of the West, Jihady attitudes etc and mosque bookshops selling extremist literature.
In ALL cases the mosques claimed:
1. the teachers were 'visiting preachers'.
2. they were unaware of what was being taught.
3. The bookshop was not part of the mosque, but was independantly run so they were not involved or responsible for the 'literature' it sold.
4. The teachers were no longer with the mosque.
5. The preachers were independants who had only hired mosque rooms.
etc, etc etc.

In other words all the mosques "exposed" were in denial about what was done on their premises.
At the very least this shows an utterly staggering indifference as to whether extremism is being preached and at worst means that they are promoting extremism - whilst maintaining a (not very) "plausible deniability".

All countries should enact legislation to make the use of any building for terrorist recruitment and/or indoctrination a criminal offence and to make the buildings' owners responsible for monitoring activities.
this would have one of two effects:
Either extremist preaching would come to a sudden halt, or Mosques (and other buildings) would be closed down once their involvement in extremist preaching etc was demonstrated. This latter would at least have the effect of disrupting radicalisation.

Dr. Laina is quite right to say that in many respects the greatest danger comes from the indegene convert.
This is because we forget that the convert is often the most fanatical member of any given "grouping" and they have the advantage of being able to pass most easily within the "host" society etc.

A second danger comes from the extremists deliberately targetting those who lack the mental faculty for critical thought.
In the UK we recently had the "Exeter Bomber". A young Anglo-Saxon man, name Nicky Reilly, who suffered from Asperger's and had a mental age of 10 (physical age 22) converted to Islam (probably under some sort of psychological duress) and was then groomed by online extremists to carry out an attack.
(He failed in that a premature detonation of his petard of a bomb hurt only him and at that not very seriously.)
Now apart from the sickening aspect of the use of a highly vulnerable person (which is not new - extremists in Iraq/Afghanistan use kids as young as 10 and 11 as murder bombers) it shows that the extremists are as devious as pedophiles in their use of the web ( I guess that shouldn't surprise either!).

What can we do to guard against these twin dangers?
Here are my suggestions:
In the first place the Western world needs to understand the danger of extremist Islam. This message has not got through yet , that despite 50+ years of anti-Western Islamic terrorism. For example Nicky Reilly's family said "he had grown increasingly intolerant of them but had shown no signs of extremism."
What this means in fact is that they did not recognise the signs of extremism. Nor would they, since most people in the UK (I could probably generalise that to "the West") are not aware of what to look for, blinded as they are by the mantra "Islam, the religion of peace".
Second (and many parents / guardians do this in terms of pedophiles) we need to monitor the internet activity of vulnerable young people. This need not be Orwellian: if asked appropriately both children and innocents tend to reply honestly and so will reveal the fact that they are being exposed to extremist material.
Alternatively monitoring software is available and parents/ guardians etc could then check up on sites visited and make time to talk about anything undesirable.

I say:

To be honest I believe Muslims are using different tactics to take over America for two reasons:

1. Our military power

2. If they try to cause trouble here like they do in the Europe there will be plenty of Americans willing to take up arms and go after them with guns.

Hello, Jonc, That was a good

Hello, Jonc,

That was a good informative post you wrote, thanks. At least we in the West in India still have a functioning free press and security services, who can monitor and detect what goes on in Mosques. Your suggestions to counteract; yes of course the Western public should wake up more and keep an eye on what these youngsters think and do. I hope FFI and many other such sites much help with that, in all Western countries and India and its allies.

I find it a stale expression, but I think there is something called "Islamic propaganda", it distorts history and current situations and events happening in the world, it extols the beneficial sides of Islam/ Islamic societies & communities while their detrimental sides are being ignored if possible, or exonerated as much as possible. While doing the reverse with the Democratic countries and many situations/ events in it. This is often without regards to finding and describing the real objective truth. And it is ubiquitous in the Islamic countries, it is stamped in children's head.

And at the same time the Western people by and large are almost totally unaware of it, while often being aware of criticizing, insulting speeches & articles of opponents of Islam. And judging them to be "racist/ fascist", extreme right-wing.

But now we can educate ourselves and our people through fact-finding about Islam and how it is carried out. Or at least how it is "misused" or "ignored", as Muslims often claim, hence ineffective, not any better than other religions/ ways of life.

We must be and stay as truthful as we can and proliferate our knowledge and opinion to the world and if possible get politically active in favor of democracy worldwide, like Geert Wilders + EDL etc do. Worldwide, because I firmly believe the struggle between democracy and theocracy, woman-autonomy and mysoginy is a worldwide struggle. And if a big part of the Muslims worldwide and so also in Western countries and India choose for theocracy and misoginy, due to heavy Islamic propaganda, then that is justification enough to scrutinize, criticize and yes, insult Islamic teachings & practices, in order to have either democratic or at least Neutral Muslims, or ex-Muslims, who are our true allies.

Demsci: thank you for your

Demsci:
thank you for your kind words.
The free press is very important here in UK it has uncovered extremist mosques etc. But, weighed against that is the mantra touted by both the moslem apologists and the "Politically Correct" brigade, which is that "proper" or "real" or "mainstream" Islam is "the religion of peace". No comment!
(BTW: in the UK we aren't supposed to use the phrase "politically correct". Why not, it isn't PC to do so!! I kid you not.)

You are quite right about "Islamic propaganda". So-called "Islamic history" often seems to bear little relation to the more factual history.
Mind you, if the UK is anything to go by we(the West) aid and abet this.
Our history (if studied enough) will include the Crusades (of course), if you dig deeper you might come across the Battle of Tours and Charles Martel. But their is no mention in "mainstream" history of the Islamic 'crusades' and ghazias that took place throughout the last ~1400 years of history.
I find this quite inexplicable, although for the UK at least they had little direct impact on us as a nation, the effects were strongly felt (the "dark ages" etc).

You wrote: "...Western people ... are... aware of criticizing, insulting speeches & articles [by] opponents of Islam. And judging them to be “racist/ fascist”, extreme right-wing."
Absolutely, look at the tenor of the reporting of the "English defence league" which states that it protests about Islamic extremism and the fact that UAF (Unite against Fascism) counter demonstrates.
The double lunacy here is that you have "anti-fascists" who, given the essentially circular nature of politics should really be "anti-totalitarians" protesting AGAINST those protesting against Islamic extremism which is totalitarian (or "fascist" if you prefer).
So, suddenly, the "anti-fascists" are protesting FOR Islamic extremism and thus on behalf of a "fascist" group! And they do not see it because of PC.

I also agree that we must educate and debate in properly open forums (FFI) so that people can make up their own minds. Ultimately reason wins out.

Marie you wrote: "there will

Marie you wrote: "there will be plenty of Americans willing to take up arms and go after them with guns."
That is certainly true.
I'm not sure that a "Mumbai" type attack would work out in some states in the USA. Though on the other hand, remember Columbine etc, so maybe it would.
More generally, with murder-bombers you only know of an attack when they detonate themselves. Unless you see the murder-jacket etc and can get in a head-shot with enough stopping-power to guarantee a kill, they can still detonate, plus there is the risk of a "deadman's switch" type of trigger.

Mind you, I do occasionally imagine the (potential) results of a "Mumbai" attack on a bunch of well armed Yanks and the massacre that results - of the Islamists that is!
