Islam: Religion of Amputation

"As to the thief, Male or female, cut off his or her hands: a punishment by way of example, from Allah, for their crime: and Allah is Exalted in power." Quran 5:38
Cutting of Hands and Feet is a cruel insane Islamic punishment given to people who steal. This punishment was ordered by the "merciful" Allah and practiced by the "Holy" Prophet.

Besides Quran 5:33 and Q 5:38, many hadiths including Sahih Bukhari and Sahih Muslim speak about cutting of hands as prescribed by Muhammed(pbuh), for example:

Narrated Jabir ibn Abdullah:
A thief was brought to the Prophet (pbuh). He said: Kill him. The people said: He has committed theft, Apostle of Allah! Then he said: Cut off his hand. So his (right) hand was cut off.

It is inconceivable that such cruel, barbaric and unusual punishments such as those prescribed by Islamic Shariah are still carried out in this day and age. Yes, these barbaric methods of punishment are still adopted and carried out in Islamic countries where Shariah law is enforced. This is in defiance of the policy of Human Rights organisations such as Amnesty International and the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR)[1], that protect human rights and fundamental freedoms.

Hand Amputation in recent times.
Nigeria, where 11 states of the nation adopted Islamic Shariah, witnessed three cases of hand amputation in 3 years since its introduction in 1999.

On July 7, 2001, a 30-year-old man in the north-western state of Sokoto has had his right hand amputated as punishment for stealing a goat, worth about $40.[2] Officials in the northern Nigerian city of Kano said the punishment was carried out on Friday in a humane manner at a local hospital.

In December of the same year, another young man was sentenced to nine months in jail and 30 public lashes, but spared amputation. The judge decided his sentence was not harsher because the value of the kitchen goods he stole was less than $8, or the price of a goat, which is the minimum prescribed for amputation under Shariah law.[3]

What's a hand Worth?
Islam's logic is indeed absurd.The concept of using punishment to fit the crime is alien to Islam. Stoning to death, eye gouging, limb amputation, beheading, killing of apostates, all sit well within the framework of Islam and this does not seem to make muslims any less comfortable with their faith, than it would any normal human being who even watch enactments of these "rituals" on TV.

It is also interesting to note that apparantly Shariah places more value on stolen property than on human life.

Here's how the immutable and just law of Allah's merciful messenger works. Under the sharia, a murderer can pay blood money or Qisas[4] to the victim’s family to escape punishment. However, no such compensation to escape punishment is allowed for a thief where the amputation is mandatory. Neither is there any means for an adulterer or an apostate to pay any kind of compensation except with their own life. So the Sharia considers a stolen property to have more value than a human whose life is taken away.
