Discussion on Christianity in Indian context is a bit of digression from the main topic. However, since it has come up, we must divide in two parts. One, the original christians circa 1-2 AD who came to Kerala (BTW, St Thomas` body is still kept embalmed in Goa). Second wave of christianity that came with Europeans has been demeaning in character and pernicious in influence for India. That is what is still seen in India in various places.
The original christianity did gel well in India since it carried flavor of Jesus. In fact, Jesus has always been refered in high esteem in India as Isa (this name is derived from Isa upanishad). Jesus was trained in Essenes mystic school, that had roots in Vedanta mysticism. During his lifetime, Jesus was in India for 4 years, some records are still intact in buddhist monasteries of Laddakh, but most records were destroyed when libraries of Takshshila were destroyed by later Islamic invasions. Certain mysteries associated with Jesus like the virgin birth and resurrection could never have been explained clearly by the Christians, because they have no understanding of mysticism, which is essentailly basis of religion. Jesus always refered to as Kingdom of God which has totally different significance to what christians refer to as God with same connotations as muslims.

In short, if you just remove Jesus from Christianity, it is no different from Islam. Jesus never founded christianity, he died as jew. Christianity in its present form as well as Islam are both going to die in due course as people get more aware, thinking and logical in approach, scientific in temper, and question the silly explanations of God by the church/mullahs/mosque and distance themselves from the violence that it entails.

Christianity is dying in europe. There is hardly in churches nowdays except for some oldies or some tourists on historical visits and that is one reason why islam became popular in europe as it tried to fill the gap created by demise of christianity. Marie, I am really sorry to hear that. I myself did my post-graduation at Univ of Illinois at UC in the US around a decade back. While most of the students in my curriculum were from Asian countries, we all enjoyed the high standard of education and open mindedness of the American profs there. I still visit US 2-3 times in a year, but have not many links with the academia (except participating in occassional alumni meets or graduation ceremonies if they coincide with my visit to Chicago).
If you say the standards have come down, I feel very sorry and sad indeed.

My response: Let me quote from Indian (Hindu) history. I am sure you will take back your statement. Valmiki, the author of Ramayana, was a hunter by birth and practice. He came in contact with a sage, who adviced him to practice yoga. After self-realization, Valmiki wrote Ramayana, the scripture revered by everyone, including born Brahmins. Have you heard of Chanakya, the author of Arthashastra, world's first book on finance? He was a barber by birth. Reservations based on caste or religion are nothing but politics. The great GandHi who is called the father of the failed nation called present day India, have created a new caste called Harijan (you may call Dalit), as if the number of castes existing during his time were not enough to divide India for the British Christians , the Muslim pigs and the pseudo secular Congress party to rule Indians.

Saint Thomas never ever visited India !
