On two previous occasions (9 July and 30 June, 2006,) I shared with the readers of this website a very timely topic that is being discussed on www.Elaph.com It is quite a courageous enterprise on the part of an Arab intellectual to write on such a sensitive subject as “Is Islam a Tolerant Religion?” The author has returned for the third time to the subject, being encouraged by the positive response of some of his readers.

During the recent Israel-Hezbollah war in Lebanon, Muslims here in Nigeria's Islamic North demonstrated in support of the Shiite terror group. Several months ago, Muslims again here in northern Nigeria massacred hundreds of non-Muslims in response to Danish cartoons. Five years ago, when America attacked the Taliban in response to 9/11, Muslims in Kano, northern Nigeria orchestrated a bloodbath of non-Muslims. In the past, there have also been numerous demonstrations and protests in support of the Palestinian cause here in northern Nigeria.

As a daily exercise, I glance at the various postings that appear on some Arabic-language websites. I look especially for signs of genuine moderation and objectivity in the writings of Arab commentators dealing with current issues. On 1 October 2006, I noticed on the www.kwtanweer.com site, an essay with the title of “Dialogue of Civilizations, or Clash of Cultures?” (Hiwar Hadarat, am Sira’a Thaqafat?)

Somalian Islamic pirates have, in recent years, steadily increased their attacks on merchant-ships in the busy Gulf of Aden and Indian Ocean, which has reached critical level in recent months, making the smooth operation of international trades difficult. Although American cargo-ships spared until recently, the pirates, increasingly emboldened as they have become, dared raiding an American cargo-ship, capturing its captain, Richard Phillips, on Wednesday (April 8, 2009).

That tragedy took place in a part of the world that, prior to the rise of Islam, had a strong Christian presence. One of the greatest North African Christians was Saint Augustine of Hippo (354-430). It was his legacy that contributed to the rise of the Protestant Reformation. Early in January, 2009, I read on the online daily aafaq, a report datelined Algiers that dealt with a growing number of young Algerians turning away from Islam, and embracing the Christian faith.
